For science to reach a wide audience, it must be understandable and approachable. At the National Institute for Science Communication (NaWik), scientists have been learning how to communicate with the public and the media successfully since 2012. With its tried-and-tested training and further education formats, NaWik aims to support researchers in communicating the goals, methods, results and challenges of their work and fostering dialogue about science.

Our interactive seminars are taught by experienced trainers. We give those courses either on-site at the customer’s premises or online. The courses range from workshops on the basics of science communication, courses on writing, visualising and presenting, to professional media training. Additionally, scientists can learn professional science communication through self-guided courses on the NaWik E-Learning platform, WissKomm-Campus.de.

NaWik has established the WissKon Network for researchers engaged in science communication. At the annual WissKon conference and on the WissKon platform, network members exchange views and ideas on science communication. In addition, NaWik operates the portal Wissenschaftskommunikation.de in collaboration with Wissenschaft im Dialog and KIT. On this portal, scientists, professional communicators and journalists debate current issues, discuss new formats and share results from science communication research.

The research department at NaWik was founded in 2019. Our research focus is on the empirical analysis of applied science communication with practical relevance, specifically on the evaluation of science communication activities.  Building on this expertise, NaWik offers a wide range of services ranging from strategic consulting to the complete evaluation of science communication projects.

The National Institute for Science Communication is a non-profit organisation. Its shareholders are the Klaus Tschira Foundation and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT).
