Desired outcome

Our goal is to eliminate IT barriers in scientific research, enabling scientists to work on issues that demand highly complex software.

Background

In modern research, increasingly sophisticated analysis is required to interpret scientific data. These methods can be so demanding that researchers may lack software skills to develop them effectively. Often, graduate programs in the sciences do not cover topics such as modular programming, debugging or machine learning in sufficient depth. As a result, researchers may be experts in their respective field, yet lack software development skills. Additionally, scientists are often involved in their research projects for only a few years, due to temporary positions. The result is highly specialized software that may be underperforming, error-prone and difficult to maintain (see e.g., Döll et al. 2022).

We are thus looking for promising concepts that help to overcome information technology barriers in scientific research. Examples could be approaches for better software availability, cooperation between computer centers, assistance from computer science institutes, or further training measures. We are looking forward to your ideas!
