Great ideas rarely emerge in isolation. They come to life where diverse perspectives converge, curiosity meets openness, and people find the courage to venture into uncharted territory together. Through its Sandpit Workshops, the Klaus Tschira Foundation creates a dedicated space for researchers and practitioners in education and science communication—a place for intensive collaboration, creative exchange, and the development of visionary ideas.
The focus is on questions in mathematics, computer science, and the natural sciences, as well as their intersections with research, education, and science communication. We are seeking interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary projects that transcend disciplinary boundaries, bring together diverse areas of expertise, and open up new perspectives. The Sandpit workshops provide a space to develop unconventional approaches, initiate new collaborations, and generate new ideas for science and society.
Space for Creative Thinking
A “sandpit” is more than just a workshop. It provides the time, focus, and freedom to collaboratively develop, question, and expand on ideas. Through a facilitated, open-ended process, new collaborations and perspectives emerge—ones that often don’t have a place in the regular workday.
The workshops typically take place over one to two days at the Studio conference center at Villa Bosch in Heidelberg. The inspiring environment and professional facilitation create the ideal conditions for intensive exchange and creative work.
Who Can Apply
Individuals with a topic in the natural sciences, mathematics, or computer science—one that falls within the fields of research, education, science communication, or their intersections—are eligible to apply.
The lead applicant must be affiliated with an institution in Germany. The other participants should be primarily affiliated with institutions within the EU. To ensure a productive exchange, we recommend a group size of approximately 15 to 20 people.

Outstanding ideas arise from diverse perspectives, experiences, and skills. That is why we value a diverse group of participants—both professionally and personally.
To ensure everyone can participate, we provide support as needed, such as childcare or the option to bring a companion.
Our Support
As part of its funding, the Klaus Tschira Foundation will cover the costs of organizing the workshop, as well as the costs for facilitation, event spaces, lodging, meals, and travel (economy class).

Please submit your application through our funding plattform by November 15, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. (CET).
When selecting projects, we pay particular attention to the scientific and societal potential of the topic, the quality of the interdisciplinary or transdisciplinary composition of the participant group, the diversity of the participants, and an interactive, open-ended workshop design.
