We fund interdisciplinary, innovative basic research in mathematics, computer science and the natural sciences of physics, chemistry and biology, including elements from the medical field. However, the focus must not be on medical research. Accordingly, we do not fund purely medical projects or clinical studies.
Project durations are based on demand and must meet the needs and scope of the project.
A pitch is a virtual presentation by the applicant in which the project is presented using slides. Participants are staff members of the Klaus Tschira Stiftung and reviewers. A pitch lasts approximately 60 minutes (5 min introduction, 30 min project presentation, 20 min Q&A). Applicants will receive all relevant information in advance by e-mail.

Individuals with a doctoral degree (PhD or equivalent) who have an existing or soon-to-be-established institutional affiliation are eligible to apply.
Applications are processed after the submission deadline. The time until approval or the start of the project varies depending on the project content, its complexity and the internal coordination processes.
Yes, a parallel application to other funding agencies is permitted. However, applicants should disclose this when submitting their application.
Yes, parallel funding from other funding agencies is possible. However, these funding agencies should be named in the application. It is also important to inform the KTS which specific areas of the project are covered by other funding agencies and to explain why parts of the project should be funded by the KTS.

As a rule, German state universities fulfill the purpose of promoting education and research as central social tasks. However, unlike non-profit organizations, they do not have an exemption certificate. If you work at such a university and the activity to be funded is not contract research but basic research, an application can be made regardless of the existence of a notice of exemption.
This is evaluated on a case-by-case basis. This review may take several months.
In addition to material costs, you can also apply for personnel costs for the duration of your project. For more information, please see the >terms and conditions<.
We are happy to reimburse 10% of overhead costs upon request. Please justify the overhead costs in the brief application by providing examples of items (e.g., space costs, IT infrastructure costs, office supplies, etc.).
